CougarNews.com | Hip Hop club shares their love of dance

By Jessica Breneman

Auditions will be held at the beginning of the next spring semester for anyone interested in joining the COC Hip Hop Club.

The COC Hip Hop Club began last semester by COC student Danielle Moore. Danielle started the Hip Hop Club so she could “share her love for dance and fill up some of her free time.”

Each member of the Hip Hop Club had to go through the audition process, which takes place at the beginning of each semester. During the audition process each person must learn two dances prior to audition day. They must perform those dances in front of the board members who decide who makes the team and who does not. Results are posted the following day.

Once the club members were selected the team of both male and female went to an overnight camp in Frazier Park. At the camp they were taught multiple dances within a short time period of three days. Although the camp was extremely tiring, the team members bonded as they got to know each other better.

After returning home from camp the club quickly began practicing two times a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays for four hours or more. At practice the members run through the dances multiple times correcting each mistake and making sure every person is doing the same moves at the same time.

In order to keep the close bond the team acquired at camp they continue to do various bonding activities and exercises in order to get to know each other and feel comfortable with one another.

Courtney Robbins, a new and current member of the team, joined the club because she has been dancing since she was two and wanted to dance again. She says, “dance is the way she expresses herself and she is thankful the club has provided her a way to do that again.” She says the members of the team inspire her and she would recommend auditioning for the club to anyone who enjoys dancing. She also says the team has taught her to be a more open person and more accepting of different styles of dance.

The dances the Hip Hop club performs are choreographed by Danielle Moore and a few of the other board members.

The club has participated in performing in multiple places around the valley such as Lombardi’s Ranch and local fundraisers.

Once the team is in costume and ready to hit the stage they circle up and share quotes and words of encouragement to get each member pumped up and ready to perform. This support improves their performance on stage greatly and they often shout out to each other during the live performance.

I recently had the opportunity to watch the Hip Hop Club perform at a cancer benefit where they showed superior skills and joy on stage.

The team is excited to continue the club and see what next semester brings them. If you would like to find out more information check out canyons.edu
