BOE Member Runner to Talk Taxes at Next VIA Luncheon

Is taxation the way to turn the California economy around? Expect answers to that question when the Valley Industry Association welcomes former state Sen. George Runner to the next Keynote Luncheon, Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 11:45 a.m. at the Valencia Country Club.

In 2010, Runner was elected to the state Board of Equalization’s Second District, where he serves as a leading advocate for California taxpayers. In his time on the board, he has focused on improving the state’s tax policies and practices and creating and retaining more private-sector jobs. Runner has been an outspoken critic of tax measures including the California Fire Prevention Fee and the Amazon Tax.

“We won’t ever reach economic prosperity if we keep blocking it from happening,” Runner wrote in a recent column criticizing the Legislature’s proposed oil severance tax, which the Senate has put on hold until at least 2014.

Prior to his election to the Board of Equalization, Runner served 12 years in the state Legislature, and was a member of the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee.

“Over the years, George Runner has proved himself to be an advocate for California residents,” VIA CEO and President Kathy Norris said. “I’m excited to hear what he has to share at our August luncheon.”

Reservations are required for the luncheon. Members who reserve by Aug. 8 pay $40, or $45 between Aug. 9-15. After Aug. 15, the cost is $50. The cost for non-members is $65. “No shows” or cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance will be billed. There is a $10 surcharge for attendees without a reservation. The Valencia Country Club is located at 27330 N. Tourney Road.

The luncheon is sponsored by the City of Santa Clarita, Poole and Shaffery, L/B/W Insurance and Financial Services, Inc., Mellady Direct Marketing, SCVTV, KHTS AM-1220 and The Signal. Reservations can be made by visiting www.VIA.org/Calendar or calling the VIA office at (661) 294-8088.
