Sheriff’s Medical Services Bureau Praised for Use of Telemedicine Technology

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Medical Services Bureau was awarded the AMD Global Telemedicine President’s Award for Telemedicine Excellence at a ceremony Thursday in Corona del Mar.

The bureau was selected for the award based on its ability to implement and sustain a successful telemedicine program that has improved the quality of care for its inmate population.

As the world’s largest jailer, the Sheriff’s Department is responsible for the healthcare needs of more than 18,000 patients. Its use of telemedicine technology to provide quality healthcare services has significantly reduced the security risks and costs associated with transporting inmates. More importantly, it has enabled the department to utilize providers more efficiently and expand virtual coverage to all clinic areas within the jail facilities.

* What is telemedicine? According to the American Telemedicine Association, it is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another via electronic communications to improve a patient’s clinical health status. Telemedicine includes a growing variety of applications and services using two-way video, email, smart phones, wireless tools and other forms of telecommunications technology.
