An early morning crash Sunday on Sierra Highway, north of Soledad Canyon Road, in Antelope Valley, left one man dead and a child with minor injuries.
California Highway Patrol officers and Fire Department officials responded to the scene of a collision.
Alejandro Renteria, 35, of Los Angeles, was killed when the 2010 Ford Escape he was driving southbound on Sierra Highway, managed to “leave the roadway and travel down the embankment out of control, and rolled over numerous times.”
Renteria’s 9-year-old daughter, who was a passenger in the car, managed to free herself from the vehicle and climb up the ravine where the car was trapped.
The girl hiked through difficult terrain to a nearby home, but no one answered the door, according to the CHP report.
“She hiked up a steep embankment in a very dark and threatening environment. She was finally successful in flagging down a passing motorist,” according to the report.
Officers who responded to the scene has the girl transported to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where she was treated for minor injuries.
Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the collision, according to the report. An investigation is ongoing.
