SCV Jobless Rate Improves Over Year to 6.6%

unemploymentgraphicSanta Clarita’s unemployment rate stood at 6.6 percent in July, a 0.7-point improvement over the same period last year.

It was the second consecutive month of increase after dipping to 5.6 percent in May. It’s a typical summertime phenomenon as educators file for unemployment benefits while school’s out.

Countwide, the public education subsector led the way with 36,700 month-over-month job losses. Other government subsectors shrank by 5,400 jobs.

There were 2,400 fewer private education jobs in July; most summertime private-school job cutbacks were recorded in June.

Los Angeles County saw an overall unemployment rate of 9.9 percent in July, up from a revised 9.7 percent in June but down from last July’s 11.1 percent.

The state rate was 8.7 in July, with similar comparisons, while the nation’s jobless rate was 7.4 percent in July versus 8.2 percent a year ago.

The big gainer in L.A. County in July was the information sector, which includes motion picture.

The motion picture industry added 7,800 more workers to payrolls in July, versus June, more than offsetting losses in other information subsectors. Overall, the information sector grew by 6,800 jobs.

Retail trade was up 3,700; wholesale trade was up 1,400; and transportation, warehousing and utilities were up 1,100. Leisure and hospitality added 4,500 jobs, while professional and business services added 800.
