McKeon Presents Congressional Medal to Valencia Grad

DerekFaraldo2U.S. Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, awarded local Santa Clarita resident Derek Faraldo the Bronze Congressional Medal for his participation in the Congressional Award Program. McKeon presented the medal to Derek in his Washington, D.C. office.

“The Congressional Medal awards young people who show remarkable initiative and achievement in service,” McKeon said in a statement. “Derek is a talented young man and a shining example of what dedicated young folks can do for their communities and for this nation when they chose to be involved in public service.  I am proud to have had Derek as part of our team here in Washington, and I look forward to his future accomplishments.”

“This program has taught me that community service is very rewarding,” Faraldo said. “I will continue my volunteer work and I hope to someday develop future public policy that will help those in need.”

The Congressional Award Program was established in 1979 and awards young people from 14 to 24 years old for outstanding accomplishments in public service. Each participant must complete a minimum number of hours in the four program areas: Volunteer Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration. The program is open to all young people, but requires time, dedication, and commitment to complete. Participants must keep an extensive record book and are awarded once they reach each level of achievement; bronze, silver, and gold.

DerekFaraldo1Derek graduated from Valencia High School with honors and now attends Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he is pursuing a degree in International Relations and International Law. He just completed a spring semester internship in the office of Congressman McKeon. Derek completed his public service requirement for the award program by volunteering at local food banks and participating in programs that help underprivileged students. Derek also helped organize a 5k race benefiting the troops.  Derek is passionate about giving back to the community and wants to pursue a career in law or public policy once he graduates.
