There are 24 baseball players with ties to the Santa Clarita Valley playing pro ball in major league baseball’s affiliation system. All four chosen in this year’s First-Year Player Draft have signed with their respective teams.
Rookie Ball
Seventh-round pick Trey Williams from Valencia and College of the Canyons signed with the Phillies and was assigned to their rookie level Gulf Coast team. He is hitting .107 with no home runs and an RBI.
Ninth-round pick Pat Valaika signed with the Rockies and is now playing with their Short-A affiliate Tri-City in the Northwest League where his first professional hit was a triple.
Twenty fourth-round pick Cody Harris from The Master’s College signed with the Marlins and is playing rookie ball in the Gulf Coast League. He is 1-1 with a 6.23 ERA.
Twenty fifth-round pick Kyle Hooper, from Saugus and UC Irvine, signed with the Dodgers who sent him to Short-A Ogden, Utah. Hooper is 2-0 already with the club
Former Golden Valley pitcher Scott Barlow was the opening day starter for the Dodgers Short-Season Single-A affiliate Ogden. Barlow is 0-2 with a 7.02 ERA in 4 starts.
Pitcher Casey McCarthy from Hart is with the Marlins affiliate Batavia in the New York Penn League of Single-A Short-Season. McCarthy is 1-1 with a 5.63 ERA, appearing in five games out of the bullpen. He has 8 strikeouts in 8 innings of work.
Single-A

Zach Vincej out of Saugus is with the Reds affiliate Dayton Dragons in the Midwest League. Vincej, in his 2nd year as a pro, is hitting .280 as the team’s primary shortstop, with 1 home run and 25 RBIs. One great note… In his last 10 games, Vincej is 16-for-32, with an on-base percentage of .553.
Former Hart player Trevor Brown is with the Augusta Greenjackets in the Giants organization. Drafted last year as a catcher, Brown has been moved to second base where he is playing every day and hitting .259 with 2 home runs and 31 RBIs.
Former COC and Golden Valley pitcher Chipper Smith is having a GREAT summer. Smith is 7-0 with a 2.61 ERA for the Miami Marlins Single-A affiliate Greesnboro Grasshoppers in the South Atlantic League. He has appeared in 21 games, having started just one, and also has a save, but in the last 10 games opponents are hitting .198 against him.
The Lopes brothers – Christian and Timmy, both of whom played at Valencia – are both playing in the Single-A Midwest League.
Christian Lopes is the No. 12 prospect in the entire Toronto Blue Jays organization. He is hitting .260 with 4 home runs and 40 RBIs as a second baseman with the Lansing Lugnuts.
Timmy Lopes is with the Clinton LumberKings, an affiliate with the Seattle Mariners. Timmy is the No. 17 prospect with the Mariners and is hitting .260 with no home runs and 21 RBIs. He too is playing second.
Former Hart pitcher Tyler Glasnow is pitching well for the West Virginia Power and is the No. 17 prospect in the Pirates organization. Glasnow has started 17 games for the Power, accumulating a 5-2 record with a 2.48 ERA. In just over 76 innings pitched, Glasnow has struck out 110 batters.
Former COC pitcher Cory Jones is 4-1 with a 1.02 ERA in 7 starts with the Peoria Chiefs, the Single-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Jones has only allowed 7 earned runs in those 7 starts.
And finally in Single-A, Charlie Gillies from West Ranch, COC and The Master’s College, the only player to have attended three different schools in Santa Clarita to be in professional baseball, is with the West Michigan White Caps in the Detroit Tigers organization. Gillies is 1-4 with the White Caps as a starting pitcher, with a 4.11 ERA.
