In a letter Wednesday, Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich called on Gov. Jerry Brown to comply with the federal court’s order to reduce prison overcrowding by contracting with in-state and out-of-state detention facilities.
Dear Governor Brown:
While I appreciate your appeal of the Ninth Circuit’s ruling ordering the release of thousands of prisoners, the solution to this problem is the full utilization of in-state and out-of-state, private and public correctional facilities.
Outsourcing will allow the state to comply with the federal court’s order by immediately alleviating overcrowding – without threatening public safety – and ensuring that convicted felons serve their full sentences. Additionally, this population reduction could be achieved at a fraction of the current cost of housing prisoners in state facilities.
Sincerely,
/s/
MICHAEL D. ANTONOVICH
