Supes OK New Planning Codes to Accommodate Walking, Cycling

losangelesCountySealLos Angeles County Supervisors unanimously voted on Tuesday, Feb. 5, to adopt the Healthy Design Ordinance for a healthier Los Angeles County.

Promoting walking, bicycling and exercise, and better access to healthy foods, the ordinance includes new requirements and standards for pedestrian paths and bicycle parking, and facilitates community gardens and farmers markets in the unincorporated county.

In promoting healthy living through the built environment, this effort is one of many ways LA County is addressing the obesity epidemic, and was made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through County’s Public Health Department.  The new regulations take effect March 7, 2013.

The Healthy Design Ordinance is the first step in the County’s efforts for healthy design.
