When it comes to keeping the history of blues music alive in the Santa Clarita Valley, nobody does it better than the Santa Clarita Valley Blues Society. The non-profit organization started in 2003 and keeps the tradition and history of blues alive.
With numerous ties to other groups in the city of Santa Clarita and in California, this local organization has achieved success on a national level.
Many musicians and bands associated with SCV Blues Society have placed in the International Blues Challenge “World’s Top 10” in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Their 2008 best self produced CD even won the Blues Foundation’s “World’s Best Produced CD” competition in 2010.
The local blues society also hosts open blues jam on the second Sunday of every month at Vincenzo’s Pizza in Newhall, giving people a chance to play and hear blues music live. From kids and adults to guys and girls, everyone is welcomed to sign there name up to perform with professional guitarist, bassists, vocalists and all different skill level players while enjoying some pizza and beverages.
“It gives opportunities to inexperience players to play with experience players,” said Secretary of the SCV Blues Society Jennifer Dier.
SCV Blues Society President Lynn Wollverton-Parker wants to make sure that future generations understand the importance of blues music. “We want to teach kids where the music came from because that’s where it started,” said Wollverton-Parker.
