Since the inception of the “Youth on the Move” pilot program initiated by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, Chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, 1,300 emancipated foster youth have been issued TAP cards – no-cost transit passes for Los Angeles County’s bus and rail system.
“Each year in Los Angeles County, 1800 young people from the ages of 18 to 21 are emancipated from foster care without a safety net,” said Antonovich. “A no-cost public transportation pass provides these young people with meaningful access to education, employment and social opportunities that will help them become successful adults.”
The first of its kind in the nation, the six-month-old program is a joint effort between MTA and the Los Angeles County Department of Children & Family Services. In May 2013, it will be evaluated for renewal by the MTA Board.
