While the county and state’s month-to-month jobless rates inched up in August, Santa Clarita’s jobless rate tumbled to 6.3 percent from 6.6 percent in July and 6.9 percent one year earlier.
The biggest month-to-month job gains across Los Angeles County came in the private education and health services sector, which grew by 3,500 jobs. Of those, 2,400 positions in private education were added as teachers and university instructors returned from the summer break.
The construction sector added 1,600 jobs across the county, followed by manufacturing (up 1,500), other services (1,500), professional and business services (1,300), leisure and hospitality (700), trade, transportation, and utilities (600), and financial activities (400). Mining and logging were flat.
Losers were the information sector, which includes motion picture. Motion picture constricted by 4,600 jobs during the month.
The government sector shrank by 1,700 jobs, with losses reported at the federal, state and local levels.
Los Angeles County’s August unemployment rate rose to 10.1 percent from a revised 9.9 percent in July, although it was an improvement from last August’s 10.9 percent.
Statewide jobless levels were 8.9 percent versus 8.7 percent in July and 10.4 percent in August 2012.
