Moorpark Edges COC Men in Soccer

cocsoccer092413[COC] – The College of the Canyons men’s soccer team was edged by the visiting Moorpark College Raiders 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon at COC’s Upper Field.


With the loss, the Cougars fall to 1-4-2 overall and 1-2 in Western State Conference play. Moorpark improves to 4-1-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.


Canyons put the first score up on the board. In the 15th minute, sophomore Abraham Garcia pushed a pass to Thomas Pugliese that was kicked over Moorpark’s keeper, making it 1-0 COC.


Moorpark neutralized the score in the 23rd minute as COC’s goalie Steven Rodriguez was pulled out of position and the Raiders’Andres Rodriguez scored on an open net.


Nine minutes later, Moorpark’s Marvin Cartagena turned in another goal from the top of the box, to make it 2-1 Raiders.


The second half belong to the Cougars who outshot the Raiders 13-3, and 21-7 in the match, but had trouble finding the back of the net. Canyons also held a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Francisco Baez led the team with seven shots and Miguel Ramirez and Jamie Bent turned in three each.


Steven Rodriguez played 32 minutes in goal, giving up two goals. Miguel Lopez played 57 minutes with one save.


Canyons will return to action on Friday, Sept. 27, as they host Allan Hancock at 4 p.m. in another Western State Conference match up.
