Franklin Smith, Canyon High School

This week’s Wendy’s of Santa Clarita and SCVTV Student Athlete of the Week is Franklin Smith of Canyon. Franklin has a 3.7 GPA and scored a 1780 on the SAT. When it comes to his future, he is thinking engineering.

“I feel like it’s a large field that has a lot of opportunities to advance,” said the defensive tackle.

Like many high school seniors he has a good idea where he would like to go for his education.

“I want (to go) to Virginia Military Institute,” he said. “I am hoping to get an ROTC scholarship to go there and then it’s a job right out of college, a guaranteed job, and I would have experience in engineering if I decided to leave the military. Or I could stay in the military and keep going that path.”

A natural question is to ask Franklin if he has considered any of the military academies. And while he has, there is another reason for thinking of Virginia.

“A close friend of the family is going there right now,” Franklin said. “I thought it would be really cool to have someone I know there.”

Being a good student has always been a priority for Franklin, even though he admits he was a better student before high school.

“I’ve been driven,” he said. “My parents have been… They’ve supported me, they’ve wanted me to go to college my whole life. Even when I was little I was trying to work so I could get into a good college.”

Congratulations to Franklin Smith of Canyon High School, the Wendy’s of Santa Clarita and SCVTV Student Athlete of the Week.
