The College of the Canyons music department will present their fall jazz concert “Sounds of Big Band Jazz” on Friday, Oct. 25 at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC).
With some help from local artists Lee Lowe and Fern Jones, the college’s Jazz Combo band and the Studio Jazz Ensemble will be performing a varied repertoire of music, including the arrangements of the late and longtime COC jazz professor, Dirk Fischer.
“We are very excited to share this performance with the community,” said KC Manji, the college’s music director. “It will be a testament to how much talent and creativity resides in the Santa Clarita Valley.”
A multi-talented musical artist, Lowe is the owner of Lowe’s Music, which was voted the Best Music Store in the Santa Clarita Valley from 2006 to 2011. Lowe will be accompanying the band for Louie Prima’s “Sing, Sing, Sing.”
Jones will be singing her rendition of “Blue Moon” and “Tisket a Tasket.” A COC adjunct librarian, Jones can also play the ukulele and autoharp.
In 2007, the band won first place at the RENO Jazz Festival, which is one of the biggest jazz festivals in the western United States.
“We are hoping to attend the festival again in April,” said Manji. “We will be playing numerous fundraising performances off-campus in order to make that possible.”
The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. The college’s lab band will be performing in the PAC lobby before the show.
General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for COC students and senior citizens.
