Star Party Flyer - Spring 2013 colorThe Dean of COC’s Canyon Country Campus has invited you to its next Star Party on Friday, May 3 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the Canyon Country Campus (CCC) on Sierra Highway.

“The CCC holds 2 [Star Parties] a year, one in the Fall one in the Spring [...] this campus has great geography for star viewing and we would also like to show off some of our science disciplines that COC offers,” said Dr. Ryan Theule, Dean of the CCC.

Parking is free and “the best parking is in lot 3 by the flag pole,” said Theule.

“It will be a very casual event and [parking] shuttles will be available the whole nite.”

Not only will you be able to view astronomical features through telescopes, there will be hands-on science exhibits, demonstrations and a presentation by Dr. Gerard van Belle, an astronomer at the Lowell Observatory.

Dr. Belle will share his findings and research on optical interferometry, which involves the simultaneous use of small telescopes to create a single large telescope, which provides astronomers with high-resolution images of stars.

After van Belle’s presentation on direct imaging of the stars, he will lead a Q&A session with the audience.

Members of the college’s Physics/Astronomy Club, The Local Group Astronomy Club of Santa Clarita and the Burbank Astronomy Group will set up telescopes aimed at any celestial bodies that are visible.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Bring your lawn chairs, your blankets, and your family and will be available for purchase.
