CLWA Considering 2nd Power Plant in Saugus

clwalogoCastaic Lake Water Agency officials will discuss a deal Thursday that would put a 3.5 megawatt power facility behind the agency’s Rio Vista water treatment plant in Saugus, said Dan Masnada, CLWA’s general manager.

The plant would be built by SunPower in a lot on a mesa behind the plant on land that water agency used to lease to Lombardi farms, he said.

“Over about a 20-year period, we project to save $8 million – 9 million,” Masnada said. “It’s not going to cover all of our facilities, but it’ll be a big savings over the life of the plant.”

WEve got one on the site that generates about 1 megawatt that basically offsets our power costs (at the Rio Vista plant),” he said.

The future construction would help offset the costs of operating the pumping stations that pump water to the Rio Vista station, said Dirk Marks, water resource manager for the CLWA.
