[Sen. Feinstein] – A poll released this week by the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health found a strong majority of Americans support a wide array of measures to prevent gun violence.
The poll, which surveyed 2,703 respondents in January 2013—several weeks after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School—found 69 percent of respondents support a ban on the sale of military-style assault rifles, and 68.4 percent support a ban on the sale of large-capacity ammunition feeding devices capable of accepting more than 10 rounds.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., author of the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 and a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said: “More and more Americans agree weapons of war do not belong on our streets—it’s time to take meaningful action now. This poll demonstrates the widespread support for a ban on the sale of military-style assault weapons that have no place in a civilized society.
“With public support surging, now is the time for Americans to stand up to the gun lobby to get these dangerous weapons out of our schools, our workplaces, our malls and our theaters, no matter how long it takes. This is a battle worth waging.”
