The Santa Clarita Valley’s overall Part-1 crime rate rose 9.42 percent from January to October compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Part-1 (serious or violent) crimes inside the city of Santa Clarita actually fell by 1.5 percent, but the improvement was more than offset by an increase of 36.5 percent in the unincorporated areas of the valley.
The biggest increases were seen in burglaries and theft (including shoplifting), which rose 22.1 percent and 10.3 percent, respectively, valleywide.
The biggest drop was seen in the category of arson, which fell by 32 percent over the year, with 18 incidents so far this year versus 26 incidents by this time last year.
Robberies are nearly dead-even with 92 this year and 91 by this time last year.
Forcible rape has declined by 15.4 percent this year (24 incidents compared to 28), and aggravated assaults are down by 12.3 percent (208 incidents versus 235).
Three homicides have occurred in the SCV to date in 2013, versus just one in the first 10 months of 2012.
Across Los Angeles County, the Part-1 crime rate is down by 1.51 percent this year.
