County Moving Forward with Palmdale Animal Shelter

animalcontrol_dogThe Lancaster Animal Shelter is bursting at the seams, so the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will take the necessary steps Tuesday to add a new animal shelter in nearby Palmdale.

The city of Palmdale has agreed to sell the county a 6-acre parcel of raw land that it owns in the 38500 block of Sierra Highway, a couple of blocks north of Palmdale City Hall, for $20,125.

On Tuesday the county supervisors are slated to authorize the purchase, as well as approve a $20.1 million total budget for the new shelter.

Included in that amount is a $14.9 million design-build contract with KPRS Construction Services Inc., which won a competitive bid to build a 25,500-square-foot  building with a spaces for a lobby; pet adoption; animal relinquishment, control, quarantine and euthanasia; a veterinary and spay-neuter clinic; and staff and administration areas.

Most of the money ($19.01 million) will come from the sale of tax-exempt municipal bonds, with the remainder ($1.09 million) from vehicle license fees.

The shelter has a targeted opening date of July 7, 2016.
