Roundup: SCV Golfers Advance in Tournament Play

Hart High graduate Johnny MacArthur reached the semifinals of the SCGA Match Play event at the Annandale Golf Club in Pasadena.


MacArthur, who plays for the Pepperdine men’s golf team, beat Joshua Park from Hacienda Heights, 8 and 7 in the round of 16. MacArthur, the No. 11 seed in the tournament, went on to beat third-seeded Dan Sullivan of Pasadena, 3 and 1, in the quarterfinals.


MacArthur will play Sean Crocker, a senior at Westlake High School, in the semifinals today.


Valencia High graduate Alison Lee advanced to the second round of the US Women’s Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Charleston in South Carolina.


She defeated Dawn Woodard, 3 and 1, to reach the round of 32.


In swimming, Abbey Weitzeil, swimming for the Canyons Aquatics Club, was fifth in the women’s 100-meter freestyle at the Speedo Junior National Swimming Championships in Irvine.


Weitzeil, who will be a junior at Saugus High, also swam on the 4×100 freestyle relay team for Canyons Aquatics Club with Tamara Santoyo, Mik Ranslem and Nikol Popov. They came in 33rd place in 3 minutes, 57.56 seconds at the meet.


Hart High’s Cole Cogswell, swimming for the Canyons Aquatics Club, was 54th in the men’s 100-meter freestyle in 52.37 seconds.


In cross country, the fifth race in the College of the Canyons Series is tonight.  Enrique Ramirez won the fourth race in the series in 15 minutes, 58.3 seconds last week.


Chelsey Totten was the top-finishing woman in race No. 4 in 18 minutes, 31.5 seconds.


The fifth race in the College of the Canyons Cross Country Series starts at 7.


In baseball, the Dodgers scored early and often in a 13-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Dodgers scored six runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead.


Andre Ethier and Skip Schumacher each drove in four runs for the Dodgers. Yasiel Puig went 1-for-3, walked three times and scored twice. He is hitting .372.


Game 4 of the series between the Dodgers and the Cardinals is tonight.
