Annual Auction, A Rockin’ Success

If you looked carefully at the crowd at the 42nd annual Boys & Girls Club Benefit Auction you could spot Janis Joplin, Sonny and Cher, Jimi Hendrix (possibly twins?), Paul Stanley of Kiss Bob Marley, Bret Michaels and Billy from ZZ Top.Auction guests took the “Rock On!” theme and ran with it – donning wigs, colorful clothes and a variety of “shades.” The event attracted more than 600 attendees who bid on hundreds of live and silent auction items to help the club net nearly $200,000.

Among the items that resulted in the fiercest bidding wars were the seven night St. Kitts Island getaway which went for $5,000; the 12-week old Maltese puppy which eventually fetched $4,500; a trip to Boston to the film set of “The Judge” featuring Robert Downy, Jr., brought in $5,000 and four Taylor Swift concert tickets that earned $3,750.

What’s Happening at the Clubhouses

Children, ages 7-17, enjoy a variety of stimulating and fun activities at the Canyon Country and Newhall clubhouses.
Education, Sports, Art Engage Club Kids

The American Heart Association partnered with the L.A. County Fire Department (Station 73) to provide CPR training for Newhall Branch club members. More than one hundred members in all learned basic CPR with the help of Princess Cruises, who sponsored the entire event. The American Heart Association led the training while firefighters assisted the kids.Participating teens said the best field trip they have been on was the recent rock climbing expedition in the Alabama Hills located at the base of Mt. Whitney. The six hour excursion was courtesy of the Sharma Fund, dedicated to teaching youth the basics of outdoor rock climbing. The teen members learned how to belay and how to climb after an hour long safety course.

A Spring Carnival held at the Newhall Branch was a success with a cake walk, face painting, egg tossing and hunting, and Easter baskets provided by Ross Stores.

Club kids participated in making a “Harlem Shake” video with costumes provided by staff and a well appointed Halloween costume closet. Check it out here on YouTube.

Keystone Club held a “Middle School Students Only” Dance after-club hours as well as participated in a beach clean-up at Santa Monica beaches, taking advantage of the day by hanging out after the clean-up.

Division 2 Basketball Championship game was played between Newhall & Sierra Vista. The Newhall team won a hard fought battle.

Our 14 & Under team attended Santa Monica’s Biddy Basketball Tournament. The team fought hard but unfortunately they lost in the 3rd place game and finished in 4th place.

Our high school team attended West San Gabriel Valley’s Basketball tournament and finished in 2nd place losing to the Carson Club.

Positive-place

Dear friends,

The Club kids are enjoying a great summer with many activities to keep their minds and bodies busy. School will be starting soon and this time of year always marks one of our most fun community events, the annual Day for Kids. We have several other fun events coming up such as wine tasting, and our annual Club Classic Golf Tournament.

Currently over 2,200 boys and girls are registered as Club members and an additional 3,000 young people use the Club through partnerships with other youth organizations such as AYSO, City of Santa Clarita Parks and Recreation, Girl Scouts, Warrior Football and Crossover Basketball, to name just a few.

We are grateful to our dedicated staff and the many wonderful volunteers who ensure that the Boys & Girls Club continues to provide a variety of services for our young people.

Remember, Great Futures Start Here.

Sincerely,

Jim Ventress
