A Pasadena man who was driving a 2003 Toyota Tacoma struck and killed a man who was walking across the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, north of Rye Canyon Road, at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday, a CHP official said.
“There was a fatality, it was a pedestrian, white, possibly 65 years old, male,” said Officer Cassidy of the California Highway Patrol. “The names have not been released.”
A man was driving his truck southbound in the No. 2 lane in light traffic (the second-most left-hand lane) at approximately 70 mph, Cassidy said.
“Party No. 1 felt an impact to the front end of his Toyota,” according to a CHP report. “He stated he believed that he collided into an animal and never saw the object in the roadway.”
The driver immediately pulled over and called 911, according to the report.
Upon arrival, CHP officers discovered the victim in the center median on the southbound side of the freeway.
The driver of the Toyota truck was arrested at the scene.
“Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this collision, which is under investigation,” Cassidy said.
A Coroner’s Office spokesman said he is not releasing the name of the deceased pending the notification of the next of kin.
