Amid early St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, California Highway Patrol officers screened 600 vehicles Friday during a checkpoint at The Old Road and Constitution on Friday.
There were zero arrests made for drunken or drugged driving, said Sgt. Rick Miler of the California Highway Patrol. There were also no unlicensed drivers, he said.
“We screen every car, we’re looking at every driver who comes through, and every third wcar we’ll engage them in conversation,” Miler said. “If they give us some reason to check them out, if they’re moving around or they look like they’re hiding something then we’ll engage them.”
CHP officers issued 14 field sobriety tests, and there were 11 “HBDs,” or had been drinking, Miler said.
These drivers are given field sobriety checks to make sure they are under the legal limit.
The location was selected based on a number of different factors, including traffic volume, past incidents and the safety of the drivers and officers, Miler said.
“It has to be a well-lit road, and a long stretch of road,” Miler said. “We want to make sure it’s safe.”
