March 10: Make Your Own Pysanky at St. Stephen's

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church will hold the fifth annual Pysanky making class on March 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the church’s Spurling Hall.  Artists Barbara Wampole and Olga Kaczmar will be the instructors.

Psyanky (plural of psyanka) are Ukrainian Easter eggs using the wax and dye method. Mothers customarily passed on this ancient tradition to daughters a few weeks prior to Easter. This class is free and open to all. Bring a dozen or half-dozen raw, room-temperature eggs. (The wax won’t adhere to chilled eggs.) Utensils and tools for applying the wax will be provided and those who have their own may bring them. Please phone in reservations to 661-259-7307 since the class was very popular last year and there is limited seating.

The class is only open to adults – no children, since the dyes are toxic. Topics covered in the class include: tool demonstration, pencil & dye explanation, the waxing process, dying the egg, and removing the wax.
