The West Ranch boys basketball team has a little breathing room atop the Foothill League standings.
West Ranch beat Golden Valley, 80-57, and improved to 4-0 in league, all alone in first place.
Ako Kaluna scored 25 points and led four players in double figures for West Ranch. Zac Nuttall scored 13.
Dominic Gully scored 13 points to lead Golden Valley.
The Hart boys basketball team handed Valencia its first Foothill League loss of the season, 73-56. Lewis Stallworth scored 23 points and Myles Franklin added 16 for Hart.
Riley Honaker was the high scorer for Valencia with 14 points.
Hart and Valencia are tied for second place in league with 3-1 records.
The Saugus boys basketball team won its first Foothill League game of the season, 53-29, over Canyon. The Centurions led 35-10 at halftime and had a 33-point lead. Canyon was held to a season-low 29 points.
On the girls side, Canyon beat Saugus, 63-27. Alia McCoy and Jaya Schultz each scored a game-high 16 points for Canyon.
The West Ranch girls beat Golden Valley, 60-47. Whitney Branham led the way for West Ranch with 29 points and eight rebounds.
The Valencia girls beat Hart, 67-42, behind a double-double from Sandra Ikeora. She scored 24 points and had 12 rebounds.
But the Valencia girls lost to St. Bernard, 66-61, in the Private vs. Public Showcase at St. Bernard on Saturday.
In high school soccer, the Valencia boys tied Hart, 3-3, to remain unbeaten in Foothill League play. Zach Klindworth scored a goal in the 70th minute to tie the score for Valencia. The Vikings are 3-0-1 in the Foothill League.
The Saugus boys won their first Foothill League game, 3-0, over Canyon. Zack Nua scored the first goal of the game in the eighth minute. Saugus scored two more goals on penalty kicks.
The West Ranch boys shut out Golden Valley, 2-0. The Wildcats are 4-0 in Foothill League play and have a five-game winning streak.
On the girls side, Hart and Valencia played to a 1-1 draw. Jenny Chavez tied the score for Hart with a goal in the 72nd minute.
Valencia’s Eryn Spencer game her team a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 41st minute.
The Golden Valley and West Ranch girls played to a scoreless draw.
In the NHL, the Kings finally raised their Stanley Cup championship banner at Staples Center on Saturday, then lost to the Chicago Blackhawks, 5-2.
The Blackhawks scored three goals in the first period and cruised to the opening day victory. The NHL began the 2013 season after a 113-day lockout by the owners.
In the NBA, the Lakers lost to the Toronto Raptors, 108-103.
