“In Los Angeles County, we launched a Youth Self-Sufficiency Initiative that identified educational outcomes as one of our primary goals to ensure successful transition for our foster youth,” said Supervisor Antonovich. “Enactment of the Uninterrupted Scholars Act will undoubtedly help promote the success of youth under our supervision by supporting their academic needs.”
The Uninterrupted Scholars Act will make a simple change to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 by enabling child welfare agencies to access the school records of youth under their supervision. In Los Angeles County, the bill will allow the Department of Children and Family Services and social workers to obtain school records, monitor educational progress, check attendance, and intervene on behalf of children, helping to create better educational outcomes for our youth.
