On Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7, local author Jayne Ann Saporito will be signing copies of her new novel, “A Silent, Dark History,” at the Egg Plantation from 10 a.m. to noon.
It’s a drama that plays out aboard a nuclear vessel.
Young Krista Cambridge jumped overboard into a cold sea to escape fire and a cruel husband. Rescued by the crew of a nuclear submarine, Krista’s life was forever altered. Three generations of her family would find healing through the schoolwork of a granddaughter, Kaitlyn Gardner, that removed the emotional scars with love and facts unknown to all of them except for Krista.
Theirs was a journey that started as a yacht trip on a rare sunny day in Oregon and was completed nearly forty years later. The journey ended when Krista’s son, Joey T. Gardner, learned the truth of his very being as his mother told him of how it happened. All of this only came about because of a teen-aged girl who wanted to learn about women working at sea on a submarine; and prove to her stern history teacher that she was intelligent.
As a result of Kaitlyn Gardner’s term paper research, the cycle from mother to son to daughter was completed and the family had the healing it so needed. It only took a submarine and its crew; a Captain named Thomas Lassen, that needed to save a ship, a woman, and himself; a son knowing he didn’t quite fit; and the granddaughter searching for the truth she didn’t know she would find.
Welcome aboard, and meet Krista, Kaitlyn, Thomas, Joey T. and the rest of the family, including the men of the USS PLUNGER (SSN595). Like the motto of that submarine, the past was only a prologue.
