L.A. County-USC Med Center Hosting World AIDS Day Health Fair

lacountyuscmedcenterOn Friday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center (LAC+USC) will take part in the 25th anniversary of the National World AIDS Day by hosting a health fair for the public and hospital staff organized by the Rand Schrader Health and Research Center. The event will take place on the courtyard of the hospital located at 2051 Marengo Street Los Angeles CA 90033.


National World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1st since 1988. The fair will feature HIV and AIDS educational booths. Free Rapid HIV testing and health screening for hypertension. Information regarding services available at the Rand Schrader HIV clinic will be provided for referrals as needed.


The LAC+USC Rand Schrader Health & Research Center was among the first HIV clinics in Los Angeles County, since it opened its doors in 1985 (at that time operating out of the 5th floor of OPD).   The Rand Schrader Clinic located at 1300 N. Mission Rd. continues to provide HIV specialty care and general primary care to approximately 2,300 HIV positive patients.


Seventy five percent (75 %) of our patients are Hispanics, 15% African American, 5% White, and 5% belong to Asian and other ethnic groups.


Today, an estimated 33 million people around the world are living with HIV.  In the United States, an estimated 1.1 million people are living with HIV and/or AIDS.  In Los Angeles County, approximately 60,000 people live with HIV and/or AIDS.


In the United States an estimated fifty two percent (52%) of all the new HIV infections are caused by the approximately 28% of those who are infected but are unaware of their status.


On December 6, 2013, LAC+USC Medical Center be joining worldwide efforts to raise awareness of the global pandemic of this disease and encourage individuals, institutions, and government organizations to work together on developing solutions to halt the epidemic.
