Chris Lougheed, a veteran educator and Canyon Country resident, has been named principal of the Tobinworld school in Glendale, a private learning center for autistic and special needs youth.
Lougheed, 46, who has spent his entire 22-year professional career at Tobinworld, first as a high school teacher and then as assistant principal for the past 20 years, succeeds Chuck Conrad, who retired after 17 years as head of the school.
Founded in 1976 by Judy Weber, executive director of Tobinworld, the non-profit organization provides specialized behavorial education to children and young adults who have been classified as severely emotionally disturbed, autistic or developmentally disabled.
“Chris Lougheed and Chuck Conrad have been instrumental in the growth of our pioneering school,” said Ms. Weber. “We look forward to having Chris’ leadership well into the future, while at the same time thanking Chuck for his distinguished 23 years of service.”
The school, which serves nearly 300 students from 24 school districts, is part of Tobinworld’s comprehensive programs which provide education and treatment to its population, and seeks to impart each student with the skills and behaviors needed to happy, normal and productive adulthood. In addition to the grade school through high school curriculum, Tobinworld also provides recreational, athletic and cultural activities; vocational and independent living training for students each day.
Lougheed, a native of Los Angeles, is married to Sylvia Lougheed, principal at Tobinworld’s partnering specialized Brill School for Autism. He received a Master of Science in Special Education from National University and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from California State University, Northridge.
