Oct. 11: 'Girl Rising' to Screen at Hart High (Video)

The Human Rights Watch Student Task Force chapters of Santa Clarita Valley will be hosting a special screening of “”Girl Rising,” a noteworthy film directed by Academy Award nominee Richard Robbins.

The documentary follows the stories of nine extraordinary girls from different countries which include Cambodia, India, Egypt, Peru, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Haiti, and Sierra-Leone. The girls’ stories expose the challenges faced by countless young girls who are denied access to education. These girls must be courageous in striving to bring forth change to not only their lives, but also to the communities in which they live in. In addition to the remarkable girls in the film, celebrated actresses of our time narrate “Girl Rising.” These noteworthy women include Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Selena Gomez, Chloë Moretz, Freida Pinto, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, and Meryl Streep.

This special event marks the launch of the HRW Student Task Force’s campaign to raise awareness about the universal right to education for all children and the need to ensure that children have access to safe schools worldwide. Follow up events will take place on November 1 at the Valencia Library, November 15 at the Canyon Country Library and on December 7 at the Newhall Library. Information will be posted on the Santa Clarita Library website with details of these upcoming events.

Come out and celebrate the International Day of the Girl by attending our screening of “Girl Rising.”
