The celebration of Lunar New Year was the inspiration for the February art project for 5th and 6th grade students at the Old Town Newhall Library. The art project changes monthly, giving the artists a timely and relevant subject to work with. This month saw the creation of a Chinese Dragon made from recycled cardboard, colored markers and paper. The finished artwork is on display in the lobby of the library. ARTree board members Dianne Foderaro and Melissa Lackman guided the students through the two sessions needed to complete the piece. Classes are on the first and second Fridays of each month, continuing through May. To get more information on these classes, contact The ARTree at www.theartree.org or the Old Town Newhall Library.

“6-Shooters” Capture Scenes of Cowboy Star

Six students have enrolled in The ARTree’s first video project. The team, known as the “6-Shooters”, have chosen silent cowboy film star William S. Hart as the focus of their documentary. The teenage filmmakers are conducting research on Hart, formulating their shooting schedule, and becoming familiar with the camera and editing equipment. The research will prepare these students for one full day of shooting. Dianne Foderaro is coordinating the project with the class being led by Ruben Norte, a retired Emmy award winning writer and director. Technical training on the use of the camera and editing equipment is being done by Ramon Hamilton of Think Ten Media, a film production company located in Castaic.  The classes run for 8 weeks at the Newhall Community center. Funding for this project is provided by a grant from the City of Santa Clarita.

Summer Classes on General Meeting Agenda

Join your “buds” at the ARTree General Meeting on Wednesday, February 20th in the Community Room at the Old Town Newhall Library. In addition to learning about current ARTree projects and events, a major item for discussion will be planning The ARTree summer classes at the Newhall Community Center. In addition to looking for volunteers to teach and assist in the six-week program, the curriculum and class size will be discussed. All ARTree “buds” are requested to contribute their ideas and suggestions to make the 2013 summer classes as successful as last year’s.

ARTree returns to March SENSES

The ARTree makes a welcome return to SENSES on Main Street, bringing activities for both children and adults. Beginning with the March 21 event, ARTree has committed to once again be a continuing presence at this popular city-sponsored evening of music, food, and art. Scheduled for the third Thursday of every month from 7pm to 11pm on the south end of Main Street, SENSES has a different theme each month that gives visitors to the ARTree booth a unique art experience that can be shared by children, teens and adults. The ARTree is pleased to once again be part of this lively street event.

Prepare to be inspired at Art Slam!

Mark your calendar for a new arts event beginning in March. Art Slam! is a monthly city-sponsored event that highlights the diverse styles of art being done by local artists. Art Slam! will be on the north section of Main Street, just outside the Newhall Library. Each month a new visual medium will be on display, with the inaugural event framing the use of light and projection. The ARTree is planning a special multimedia presentation as its first project. Art Slam! is scheduled for 7pm on the first Thursdays of the month.
