The Angeles National Forest will have a “Fee Free” day Saturday, June 8, in honor of National Get Outdoors Day, for all visitors. The National Forest Adventure Pass will not be required.
As part of this day, volunteers are invited to the Operation Super Canyon Sweep 2013 event to help clean up debris. Those interested should meet at the San Gabriel Canyon Off Highway Vehicle Area on San Gabriel Canyon (Highway 39) about 2 miles north of San Gabriel Reservoir at 8 a.m.
Volunteers will then be bused to various points to clean up about 15 miles of streambed along the North Fork, West Fork and East Fork areas. Lunch, bottled water, suntan lotion, and trash bags will be provided. The cleanup will last until 3 p.m. Operation Super Canyon Sweep is supported by the Forest Service, California Trail Users Coalition, Boeing California Employees Community Fund, Fisheries Resource Volunteer Corps and other groups. Professional graffiti removers will also participate.
National Get Outdoors Day is an annual observance that began in 2008. Its goal is to encourage families, and particularly children, to seek healthy active lives and to appreciate out forests and other natural areas. Studies have found that American children spend 50 percent less time in the outdoors than they did 20 years ago.
Additional “Fee Free” days on the Angeles will be observed on: National Public Lands Day, Sept. 28; and Veterans Day weekend, Nov. 9-11.
